Thriving through medical challenges: an in person and online therapy support group

  • Thrive Therapy Santa Barbara 615 State Street Santa Barbara, CA 93101 United States (map)

Thriving through medical challenges is a group for those grieving a diagnosis, a difficult season in life, a medical challenge, treatment, or complication that might not be visible to others.

Medical complications and uncertainties can be a profoundly life altering and isolating lived experience.

What if there was a place that the pieces of grief you are holding, the acknowledgement and suffering were kindly held, mirrored and spoken about

Thrive means to grow through the hard things you go through, and here at Thrive, we believe that thriving through is easier alongside those who get it.

Thriving through a challenging season, newfound diagnosis or a new normal that feels isolating.

Thriving as you re-learn to trust your body,  a place where pain has befriended, where healing is fighting, and at the precipice of carrying you forward.

Join an intimate group of 5-7 participants who are also journeying through a new diagnosis, a medical complication or treatment in a seaso

We meet weekly:

  • Downtown Ventura off Figueroa - near Main Street and downtown

  • Downtown Santa Barbara at our office on State Street

  • Virtually for anyone who is based in California and looking for therapeutic support as they process grief and loss

What it is: this group provides a complementary component of psychoeducation - a therapeutic lens and resources rooted in psychology and mental health. Because the group is led by a therapist there is an advanced level of training on medical complications, grief and mental health challenges that arise with wading through uncertainty.

Groups consist of 5-7 participants and previous group members have shared that it is a beautiful pairing of therapeutic support in addition to individual therapy or is a fantastic alternative as a cheaper and more affordable option.

While grief and uncertainty can often ring loudest during medical challenges, what if there was an anchoring space to weekly bring your highs and lows of your medical diagnosis? Even well meaning friends and family can quietly miss the level of attunement, anchoring and acknowledgment of all you are holding.

While your body is kindly doing in the background: healing, holding on or hunkering down in this season of complications, let this group be a place you can land. A place you don’t have to show up filtered, prepared to comfort others or sugarcoat the sadness and cynical experience that is journeying through medical diagnosis, treatment or invisible to others pieces.

If you’re in a season of trusting the unseen, surrendering while fighting, taking a step that feels equal parts terrifying and yet, the only choice you can make. I have created a space for you.

This group is for you if you are:

  • Mourning a diagnosis, season or situation that is grief filled and challenging

  • Wanting a space to process your feelings, honor the hurt you are holding and heal as you navigate medical uncertainties

  • Craving connection and a space to vocalize and be seen in your often invisible to other challenges and seeking support the highs and lows of this process

  • Needing supportive tools to deepen self regulation, cultivate peace, self compassion and continue healing therapeutically as your journey of healing is long and sustenance is needed to persevere

  • Desiring community and commonality, as many people in your life don’t understand the magnitude, despite wanting to hold empathy and space

  • Cultivating courage you didn’t ask for, in a story you are now living

Our next round: This group continuously meets. We ask participants to commit to coming weekly for two months - this helps create cohesion, depth and emotional safety as people journey and share. Most participants choose to continue after those two months on a month to month basis as it feels supportive. New participants join when there are openings.
