Thriving through solo parenthood: a place for single parents raising their kids solo

  • Thrive Therapy Santa Barbara 615 State Street Santa Barbara, CA 93101 United States (map)

Thriving through solo parenthood is a place for single parents raising their kids solo.

  • There is no co-parent (or they exist but aren’t in the picture)

  • No backup plan

  • For many, no family closeby

You are quite literally - everything for your kids. The sole provider. The sole attachment. Their family. The only one who can financially provide. The only one who can do the dishes at night, pack the lunches in the morning, remember that it’s xyzy day at school. You are their comfort. Their chauffeur. Their advocate. Their biggest fan. The last to bed. The first to rise. Their hope when you feel hopeless, their comfort when you are crumbling.

There are such few places for single parenthood, and solo parenthood, even moreso.

What if there was a place that the pieces of grief you are holding, the acknowledgement and sacrifice you are wading through was kindly held, mirrored and spoken about

Thrive means to grow through the hard things you go through, and here at Thrive, we believe that thriving through is easier alongside those who get it.

Thriving through solo parenthood is a path many don’t walk, let alone thrive through.

Thriving as you re-learn to trust the life you now live

  • What if there was a place where the unseen load of solo parenthood is welcomed

  • Where your experiences aren’t solved, minimized or compared, but compassionately seen

  • What if we befriended this challenging season together, cultivating quiet courage as you continue forward

  • What if you had a chance to meet other humans journeying through this equal parts best and most challenging lived experience yet

Join an intimate group of 5-7 participants who are also journeying through it alongside you.

We meet weekly:

  • Downtown Ventura off Figueroa - near Main Street and downtown

  • Downtown Santa Barbara at our office on State Street

  • Virtually for anyone who is based in California and looking for therapeutic support as they process grief and loss

What it is: this group provides a complementary component of psychoeducation - a therapeutic lens and resources rooted in psychology and mental health. Because the group is led by a therapist who has a heart for single parents and lived experience as a solo parent, and is journeying alongside this chapter with you. Weaving in hopeful anedotes, therapeutic techniques and supportive frameworks to cultivate courage and compassion.

Groups consist of 5-7 participants and previous group members have shared that it is a beautiful pairing of therapeutic support in addition to individual therapy or is a fantastic alternative as a cheaper and more affordable option.

Even well meaning friends and family can quietly miss the level of attunement, anchoring and acknowledgment of all you are holding.

This support group is a place you don’t have to show up filtered, prepared to comfort others or sugarcoat the sadness and cynical experience that is being everything - physically, emotionally, financially for the humans you are raising.

This group is for you if you are:

  • Needing a space to breathe, be reminded that you are human, and be held as your life is 24/7 holding the world of your kids and keeping it spinning

  • Wanting a space to process your feelings, honor what is hard, while holding on to hope

  • Craving connection and a space to vocalize and be seen in your often invisible to other challenges and seeking support the highs and lows of this process

  • Needing supportive tools to deepen self regulation, cultivate peace, self compassion and continue healing therapeutically as your journey of healing is long and sustenance is needed to persevere

  • Desiring community and commonality, as many people in your life don’t understand the magnitude, despite wanting to hold empathy and space

  • Cultivating courage you didn’t ask for, in a story you are now living

What this group is not:

  • A replacement for individual therapy *attending individual therapy a requirement for all group members to join

  • A place to bash your ex or the parent of your children

  • A specific support group for divorce, widowhood, solo by choice or DV survivors

This group is a neutral spot. A holding container for the journey, not a space to air out grievances or poison the well, a quiet space that acknowledges: no matter how you got here - here you are.

And while your day to day is often held alone, for one hour of the week you have a place to be held, to be seen, to be reminded: you are carrying a load you were never meant to carry alone.

    • We are here to carry the load with you.

Our next round: This group continuously meets. We ask participants to commit to coming weekly for two months - this helps create cohesion, depth and emotional safety as people journey and share. Most participants choose to continue after those two months on a month to month basis as it feels supportive. New participants join when there are openings.

Please fill out the below form if interested in securing a spot.
